25: Balden the White

Image
Bakkertag 18 th Sigmarzeit After leaving the temple of Shallya you went for a coffee and bumped into Heinrich. Berta and Dietrich went off on their own, while Max decided he should check on the dredging, and Balden and Heinrich went along with him. When you got to Smaalkanaal the new engineer and his labourers were making steady progress. Max decided they would be finished early tomorrow at that rate. But he noticed that the strip of mud left between the Doodkanaal and the Smaalkanaal holding all the water back was a lot narrower than he would have made it. In the interests of health and safety he told the new engineer that, but he just told him that he had been engineering for thirty years and Max should mind his own business. You also noticed some of the cynical locals looking on with mild hostility, but you guessed that watching dredging was pretty boring and even they had got a bit bored with their doom saying. But then the green daemonic disease creature emerged from the tu...

Bakkertag 18 th Sigmarzeit Balden came back from his stay in the marshes to find that Berta had moved into his bed, but Frau Koester was happy to make another bed for him on the floor, and that was more comfortable than his parents’ place any way. Over breakfast you decided that you would revisit Smaalkanaal and try to work out exactly which warehouse you had robbed, and you also wanted to check whether the pool you had found really was legit and part of the temple of Shallya. And you wondered whether the Verdant Heart w as legit, as well. At Smaalkanaal there were three labourers ready to work with their shovels and cart but the engineer hadn’t turned up yet. And the labourers complained that some idiot had locked up the Brass Serpent. You then went to the t emple of Shallya and its location correlated with your calculations. Outside there was a line of beggars waiting for their dole and some sick people queuing for the infirmary. Y ou saw a number of nuns and priests wearing ...

Marktag 17 th Sigmarzeit The next day, Berta’s ear had healed a bit, and so she joined you on your way to the Smaalkanaal. Dietrich was not there, however. Berta wheeled her cart down, with her tools in, to the canal and you found some planks and stuff in case the tunnels needed shoring up. At the Smaalkanaal the four guards the MEG had sent were nowhere to be seen. But there were those locals still checking you out. You went to speak to them and they told you that the guards had gone home because the area was haunted. You asked them what was haunting it, but they weren’t very clear, they seemed to think things from the past should stay buried. You entered the tunnel, and it still smelled badly, but you all managed to cope with the stench, even Heinrich who had felt ill the day before was able to tolerate it. At the crossroads you spotted some symbols on the wall and floor at the left hand turning. They were triangles with a circle in side but none of you knew what that meant....

22: Dredging up the Past

Wellentag 15 th Sigmarzeit While you had been at the opera, Dietrich had been sound asleep in bed, still under the influence of the dark wine. When you all woke up in the morning, you told him about the your night at the opera, but he seemed to know a lot about it, having sort of dreamt it, too. But in his dream all the people in the opera house had been dragged off through the gate by the daemons. Berta was still in a bad way with her ear injury and didn’t want to get up, and so the rest of you made your way to the Hangman to see if Rotter had anything for you. He told you about the opera house thing, but his version was that the opera was so bad that everyone rioted, demanding their money back and a few people had been killed in the stampede, and there was nothing strange about it. Max decided he could go back to the Marienburg Engineers’ Guild to see if they had any work for him, as he had been promised a chance to earn his membership. On the way to Hightower you passed the ...
