5: Heiligdom
Over breakfast at Frau Koester’s, Max and Heinrich told Kristoff and Balden what had happened the previous days, with the strange ring and the house clearance, and the strange piper bloke in the alleyway.
You handed over "De Sterrenkaart der Zeevaarders" to Kris. He can’t read and he doesn’t speak Wastelander, but he could look at the pictures.
You decided to go up to the ‘Change in Hightower to see if you could find out what happened to Gustav Andersen. You met a clerk there, who knew him and so he was happy to share with you all the rumours he had heard. He said that Gustav had made a fictitious report about the prospect of an eclipse, or something, which was odd because Gustav wasn’t that interested in Astronomy, he was more into history. And then he had heard he had been carted off to Heiligdom.
You knew about Heiligdom because you had a good view of it from the guest house, and you knew it was an infamous lunatic asylum run by the sisters of Shallya. So you went back to Kruiersmuur and on the way bought a load of nice pastries to give to Gustav.
You had to find a water taxi to take you across the Doodkanaal but you got there and a young sister let you in. She went to see if you could visit Gustav and you gave her the pastries and after a while she came back and said it would be alright to talk to him for fifteen minutes. And you suspect she stole one of the pastries.
She led you up to the top of the fortress and left you alone with Gustav. You asked him some questions but he wasn’t very forthcoming with answers and didn’t look in the best of moods. And when Kris grabbed him and demanded he answer you, you realised that there was just a bloody mess where his tongue should be.
So Max got out some writing implements and you got Gustav to write down his answers. You got the impression he would tell you about his report and the eclipse if you took him to Goffman. You agreed and when the sister returned, Balden managed to send her to sleep and you locked her in Gustav’s cell you made your way out of Heiligdom.
You took a water taxi to Goffman’s which was on Lomaxstraat in a nice area of Guilderveld and a young student type called Klaus let you in, and went to fetch Goffman.
Goffman was an older academic looking man. He thanked you for bringing Gustav. You sort of questioned him about what he knew but he questioned you, as well. You lied about the ring and said is was a silver and ruby thing, but he didn’t seem too interested in that.
He explained that he and Vogelgesang had been studying the heavens and had predicted an eclipse for about three or four weeks. He said that the boundaries between worlds were weakened during an eclipse and had found evidence that the eclipse was going to be used by a daemon called the Forgotten One to enter the world and destroy Marienburg.
He said something about a daemon called the Egg which would be used as a vessel for the Forgotten One. He wanted you to fetch the Egg for him so that he would be able to stop the daemon breaking through. You weren’t very sure whether you could trust him.
He read out a passage of prophesy about a daemon called Zahnarzt being worshipped by the Brotherhood of the Forgotten One and it returning to the world to destroy it.
Goffman got out a long fang from inside a book ‘A Theory of Chaos’ and said some sort of incantation, and the fang spun around pointed in a certain direction. He checked the direction with a compass and said 277 degrees. He explained it was always at 277 degrees, and that was the direction the Egg was in, but he didn’t know how far away it was, and he wanted you to go into the Grootscher Marsh and fetch it.
After a bit of haggling you agreed to do it for a hundred Guilders, with half paid in advance. Goffman told you that Klaus would be prepared to travel with you and to bring the fang to make sure you would be able to locate the Egg. Klaus wasn’t very happy about that, but didn’t seem to have much choice about it. You agreed to set out first thing in the morning and you decided you needed to buy some supplies that evening to help you on your journey.
